The government is officially calling on civilian cyber professionals to serve in national cybersecurity. This is not a standard hiring programme. This is a government-level admission that the problem has reached a critical point. In May we wrote about 30,000 unfilled cybersecurity vacancies in Australia. Now the shortage has reached national defence. Here is what this means in practice. When the government cannot fill cyber positions even in the military — the private sector finds it even harder to compete for the same people. Banks, hospitals, energy companies, small businesses — all competing for the same limited talent pool. And that pool is shrinking relative to growing demand every year. At the same time today marks the start of Scam Awareness Week 2026. This year's theme: "No one's just a number." Behind every record in a database is a real person. A retiree who lost their savings. A patient whose medical data ended up on the dark web. A club visitor who just stopped in for a beer. Both stories today are saying the same thing. Cybersecurity is no longer an IT budget question. It is a question of national security and human dignity. And while demand for specialists outpaces supply — organisations that cannot hire need to think differently about closing their gaps.
