Today we want to step back and show the full picture — because the data makes one thing very clear. The pattern has not changed in four years. But the cost has. In 2025 Australia recorded 1,205 data breach notifications. An all-time high. 59% were deliberate attacks — not accidents, not human error. Someone decided to come in and they found a way. Average losses from a single incident. $33,000 for individuals. $56,600 for small business. $97,200 for medium business. $202,700 for large organisations — up 219% year on year. The bigger the company the more it loses. And the less room it has to absorb it. Three things sit behind these numbers again and again. Unpatched vulnerabilities in internet-facing systems. Stolen or compromised credentials. Third parties nobody was watching. These are the same threats that sat behind Medibank in 2022. Four years later nothing has changed except the scale. AI has reduced the cost of launching an attack to almost zero. What used to require a team of experienced hackers is now automated and accessible to anyone. Attackers are scaling.
