Name. Address. Date of birth. Just standard procedure. Now the sign-in data from 18 NSW clubs has potentially been compromised. Around one million people may be affected. This is not a leak from an online store. Not a bank breach. Not a corporate incident. This is data people handed over just to grab a beer or play poker at their local club. And that is exactly the point. We think about data protection in the context of banks, healthcare, large corporations. We do not think of the club on the corner as a custodian of our personal data. But it is. Every time you sign in at the door. In 2026 every organisation that collects data is a potential target. Not because it is important. But because it has data. And attackers do not care who is holding it. For Australian businesses the lesson is clear. If you collect customer data โ any data at any touchpoint โ you are responsible for protecting it. And your customers are not thinking about that when they hand it over.

- If you collect customer data at registration or sign-in โ check how it is stored, who has access and how long you keep it after it is no longer needed
- Apply data minimisation โ collect only what you genuinely need and delete what you no longer need to keep
- If you are a ClubsNSW visitor โ check Have I Been Pwned with your email and notify your bank if you used the same details in other services
