Western Sydney University is investigating a cyber incident after detecting unauthorised access affecting students. Around 10,000 students impacted. This is the third major breach of Australia's education sector in 2026. Canvas. Monash. Now WSU. But the number that should stop every business leader is not 10,000. It is 520. Some Australian mining and manufacturing organisations took more than 520 days to detect intrusions. Then an additional 84 days before reporting. 520 days. Eighteen months. Every day data was leaving. Every day nobody knew. Qantas detected their breach in two days and we called it a good example. And it was. Because two days is exceptional in Australia right now. For most organisations the attacker is long gone before anyone notices anything was wrong. This is the detection gap. And it is the most dangerous gap in Australian cybersecurity in 2026. It does not matter how strong your perimeter is if you cannot see what is happening inside. It does not matter how quickly you respond if it takes you a year and a half to realise there is something to respond to. The organisations that are pulling ahead are not necessarily spending more on prevention. They are investing in visibility. In detection. In the ability to ask what is happening right now and get an honest answer.

  • Check your logging coverage — are you collecting logs from all critical systems and are those logs actually being reviewed
  • Set up alerts for anomalous activity — unusual login times, large data transfers, new admin accounts created outside business hours
  • Run a tabletop exercise with your team — if someone reported suspicious activity today does everyone know what to do next
